Description

There Blegiana walnut it is one of the excellences of Trentino Alto Adige and Slow Food Presidium . They are produced exclusively on the Bleggiano plateau.

An ancient variety of nuts typical of this area of Trentino, it had been highly appreciated in past centuries. Its cultivation has been documented since the 16th century.

Cultivation area : Bleggiano plateau (Province of Trento) in the municipalities of Bleggio Superiore and Comano Terme.

FEATURES :

There Blegiana walnut it stands out from classic walnuts due to its size: in fact it is smaller and oval in shape with the thinnest shell that can break with the pressure of the fingers.

The kernel is clear, rich and the flavor is unique, in fact it turns out sweet , spicy And very aromatic .

There are very few producers of this variety of walnut, we have chosen a small certified organic producer.

Our organic Bleggio walnuts stand out for:

Absence of chemical residues and mycotoxins.
Harvested at the right moment of maturation (no unripe fruit).
Manual harvesting from plants.
Low temperature drying (max 30-35°C) to keep the precious oil contained in the fruit naturally rich in Omega 3 and Omega 6 unchanged.

HISTORY

Until the second half of the Seventies, the Bleggiana walnut was sold in large quantities in the confectionery sector, especially on the Neapolitan market. Over the last 60 years it has been increasingly abandoned in favor of the cultivation of walnut varieties with decidedly higher and therefore more profitable yields. The Bleggiana variety requires approximately 15 years to enter into production, therefore in addition to the cutting of numerous trees and the failure to replant new trees, this Italian walnut is in danger of extinction.

From 2009 a group of small producers* from the Bleggiano plateau (Trentino) has once again believed in this variety by relaunching its production. And in November 2016 this typical variety of walnut has become a Slow Food Presidium.

*Bleggio Walnut Brotherhood :

is the group of producers of the Beggiana walnut. It carries out a very important task for the protection of this variety. In fact, it has created a seedbed for the production of rootstock plants. 760 walnuts were planted to create the rootstocks on which to graft the Bleggiana variety (with material collected from the best mother plants).

In January my wife purchased from you, among other things, bleggio walnuts: large, well toasted, healthy and with an excellent flavour. A month later I ordered more, same type, but they arrived small, and many with dark (sick) and bitter pulp. Another thing. At 14 euros per kilo it doesn't suit me.
