Vincenzo's Farm: A Haven for Biodiversity and Sustainable Agriculture
In 1998, Vincenzo embarked on a journey to revitalize the abandoned lands of Cava d'Ispica, Sicily. Guided by the wisdom of local farmers, he transformed 10 hectares of land into a thriving haven for biodiversity and rare crops. Situated within a Site of Community Interest (SIC) and surrounded by two archaeological parks, Vincenzo's farm embodies sustainable agriculture, employing only organic production methods and soil-friendly techniques that harmonize with the preservation of the region's unique biodiversity.
Amidst the dry-stone walls, terraces, waterways, and wetlands of Vincenzo's farm, acanthus, the evergreen plant that inspired Corinthian columns, flourishes alongside thyme, nepitella, blackberry bushes, hawthorn, and alaternus. Over the years, Vincenzo's dedication has led to the expansion of his farm, encompassing an additional 17 hectares of leased land. His efforts have revitalized this marginalized area, reviving the cultivation of walnuts, carob trees, olive trees, and fruits. Most notably, Vincenzo has reintroduced the ancient Ispican sesame variety, earning recognition as a Slow Food Presidium for Biodiversity.
